What Vegetable Tanning Actually Does

Hides are soaked in a series of tannin baths over weeks, sometimes months, letting the tannins slowly bond with the collagen fibers from the outside in.

That slow pace is exactly the point. Because the tannins penetrate gradually, the resulting leather develops a dense, firm structure with a warm, earthy tone straight out of the tanning pit — no need for heavy pigmentation to achieve a finished look. It's also the reason vegetable-tanned leather is prized for its ability to develop a rich patina over time: the surface reacts to oils, sunlight, and everyday handling in a way that deepens its color and enhances its character the more it's used.

What Chrome Tanning Actually Does

Chrome tanning, developed in the late 1800s, uses chromium salts instead of plant tannins — and it's dramatically faster, often taking less than a day compared to weeks for vegetable tanning. That speed made it the dominant method in mass leather production almost immediately after it was introduced, and it remains the industry standard for the vast majority of leather goods produced today.

Chrome-tanned leather tends to come out of the process pale blue-gray (often called "wet blue"), which means it needs additional dyeing or pigmenting to reach its final color. It's also generally softer and more pliable right off the line, more resistant to water and heat, and significantly cheaper to produce at scale — all of which explains why it dominates categories like automotive upholstery and fast-fashion leather goods.
